Puri, Oct 7: Samanta Chandra Sekhar College authorities Tuesday cancelled the students’ union polls due to a rise in violent activities on the campus and closed the college for an indefinite period.
Violent agitations broke out on the college premises after the nomination papers of ten candidates contesting for various posts were rejected during the scrutiny. College authorities said they rejected the nomination papers on the grounds of the candidates’ poor attendance and their failure to clear the semester examinations. However, they reportedly failed to substantiate the claims with official records.
Protesters burned tyres on the campus and created ruckus. On being informed, police and district administration officials reached the campus and discussed the issue with the agitators. Subsequently, principal Ramchandra Das announced cancellation of the polls.
On the other hand, students whose nominations were found valid during scrutiny opposed the decision to cancel the polls and held a road blockade near the college. The road blockade was in force till the last report came in.
