Ranchi, July 31: Seven people, all from Sundargarh district, were killed while another was seriously injured when the Scorpio they were travelling in plunged into the Tajna river in Jharkhand’s Khunti district Friday.
Police sources here said the occupants of the SUV were going to Lucknow from Biramitrapur in Sundargarh district to Lucknow.
Sources said the driver of the Scorpio lost control, as a result of which the speeding SUV broke the railing of the bridge on the Ranchi-Khunti road and plunged headlong into the river.
All the seven people were killed on the spot, while the driver who has received serious injuries has been admitted to the Sadar Hospital.
The deceased have been identified as Anand Kaushik, Sushil Pandey, Ranjit Jha, Sunil Sahu and Jeevas Yadav, all residents of Biramitrapur, while Vikki Singh and Amit Pandey hailed from Sundargarh.
All of them are aged between 25-27 years, sources said. Police have sent all the bodies for post-mortem to the Sadar Hospital, while a JCB machine was pressed into service to fish out the badly-damaged vehicle from the river.
“A four-wheeler carrying eight persons was heading to Varanasi from Biramitrapur when it fell off the bridge on the Khunti-Ranchi road, killing seven occupants on the spot and seriously injuring the driver,” deputy commissioner Prasad Krishna Baghmare said. UNI
