Bhubaneswar: The work-shirking nature of officials of a majority of city police stations has come to light as victims are frequently being told by the police that they may come later as the IICs of the police stations are away.
After assuming office as the twin-city police commissioner, YB Khurania had introduced the system of appointing additional inspector in-charge (IIC) at each police station of the Capital to take up cases in the absence of IICs.
The Commissionerate police had prepared a special budget for the new appointments. It had placed two additional IICs at some of the important police stations in the city to resolve the issues. However, the additional IIC system has failed to achieve its desired goal, sources said.
Since many of the IICs have been deployed at Lower PMG to maintain law and order during rallies and demonstrations during the ongoing Assembly session, victims are returning from the police stations empty-handed.
One Amiya Das of Mancheswar are had approached the Mancheswar police to lodge a theft complaint. When he wanted to meet the IIC on the issue, an official of the police station asked Das to wait. Though Das waited there for at least five hours, the IIC didn’t turn up.
Similarly, Naresh Burma, who visited Sahid Nagar police station over certain issue Tuesday, he returned home without any solution to his problem. “I have been visiting the police station for the last five days to meet the IIC. However, officials are telling me that the IIC is now on other assignments,” rued Burma.
Likewise, people who visit Kharavel Nagar police station also face similar kind of inconvenience, though two additional IICs have been appointed at the police station.
“The primary task of police is to provide safety and security to people. They must listen to people’s grievances on priority basis. But it is a pity that they are ignoring people’s grievances,” said Satyajit Sahu, a senior citizen.
Arupanand, another resident, alleged that police have no time for addressing the issues of the common man. “Police must not neglect their primary responsibilities on the alibi of workload,” he said.
When our correspondent contacted Khurania, he said, “I can only comment on the issue if details regarding the allegations are submitted to me.”
He, however, avoided any question on the appointment of additional IICs at police stations and their readiness to listen to people’s grievances.
