Kolkata: Since the time he took over the captaincy of the Indian cricket team, MS Dhoni has always called the shots as far as his career is concerned. He gave up both the Test and ODI captaincy on his own terms. However, the 35-year-old, for the first time in his career, was removed Sunday from the position of skipper of Rising Pune Supergiants (RPS). The management of RSP appointed Australian Steve Smith as captain instead of Dhoni.
“Dhoni has not stepped down. We have appointed Steve Smith as the skipper for the upcoming season. Frankly speaking, we did not have a good last season and we wanted someone young to lead the side and revamp it ahead of IPL-X,” RPS owner Sanjiv Goenka stated here Sunday.
“I have the highest regard for MS Dhoni as a leader and a person. Dhoni continues to be an integral member of our team. He is supportive of the decision keeping the franchise’s best interests in mind,” Goenka added.
