Bhubaneswar: Utkal Karate School (UKS) was honoured Wednesday by the department of higher education, government of Orissa, for its contribution towards the self-defence training of women, throughout the state.
UKS founder Hari Patnaik was handed over a memento and certificate by higher education minister Ananta Das at a function at the Soochana Bhawan, here. Other dignitaries present were mass education minister Badri Narayan Patra, Bhubaneswar MP Prasanna Patsani and Bhubaneswar North MLA Priyadarshi Mishra. Some martial art masters, trainers, trainees and officials were also felicitated for their contributions in this aspect of development.
TN beat Orissa eves
Tamil Nadu secured a hard-fought win against Orissa defeating them by two wickets in the Senior Women’s One day league at the Nimpur Ground in Cuttack, Tuesday.
Opting to bat first, Orissa were all out for 124 with captain Madhusmita Behera (33, 85b, 3×4) and Pragyan P Mohanty (28, 31b, 2×4, 1×6) batting well. The only substantial partnership of 40 runs came during the second wicket stand between Madhusmita and Sarita Meher (10). However, after that the hosts continued to lose wickets at regular intervals and were bowled out for a paltry score. Nida Rehman (3/12) and Vilasini V (2/17) bowled well for the visitors.
In reply, Tamil Nadu also did not fare well and kept on losing wickets regularly till useful knocks from skipper Niranjana Nagarajan (32, 48b, 4×4), Namita Ojha (21) and Vilasini (21) saw them scrape through.
For the hosts, Sujata Mallick (3/25) and Sushree Pradhan (2/21) were the pick of the bowlers. Orissa are currently placed fifth with six points from four matches.
Brief scores: Orissa (Madhusmita Behera 33; Nida Rehman 3/12) lost to Tamil Nadu (Niranjana Nagarajan 32; Sujata Mallick 3/25) by two wickets.
