Basudevpur: In a tragic incident, a schoolchild died and three others were critically injured when wall of an abandoned house near Binayakpur UP School under Basudevpur block of Bhadrak Tuesday crashed on them. The four children had escaped from school during study hours and were eating black berries near the dilapidated structure.
The deceased was identified as Mansi Mallick (8), a Class-III student. The three others who were rescued from under the debris were Bibhutisundar Mallick (8), Shiba Mallick (10) and Jagannath Das (9). As their condition was critical, they were admitted to Basudevpur hospital and later shifted to SCB Medical College and Hospital, Cuttack.
Meanwhile, block education officer Rabindra Narayan Mallick, tehsildar Prakash Roula, headmaster-in-charge of the school Sarat Chandra Barik visited the hospital and inquired about the condition of the students.
Irate over the mishap, locals locked the school.
The headmaster said that the students went out of the school without his notice and were eating black berries. The abandoned house belongs to Labanya Das of Binayakpur, it was learnt.
The BEO said the matter will be looked into and action will be taken against the guilty.
Meanwhile, the district education officer has placed the headmaster-in-charge under suspension for dereliction of duty, it was leant.
