Vadodara: Emerging batsman Subhranshu Senapati (131 batting, 281b, 18×4) hit a fluent unbeaten century and was the centre piece of Orissa’s resistance as the visitors went to stumps on 316 for five in reply to Baroda’s mammoth first innings total of 503 on day three of their Group C encounter at the Reliance Stadium here Sunday.
Orissa still have to wipe out a deficit of 187 runs, but with Subhranshu still at the crease, they might have reasons to remain optimistic. Resuming on 64 for two, Orissa didn’t have the best of starts, though, as they lost Natraj Behera(24, 92b, 3×4) who was caught behind off Vishnu Solanki in the first over of the morning without any addition to his score.
However Subhranshu raised partnerships of 103 and 105 with Shantanu Mishra (46, 113b, 6×4) and Biplab Samantray (55, 109b, 6×4, 1×6) before adding 44 runs in an unbroken sixth-wicket partnership with Rajesh Dhuper (13,40b, 2×4). Vishnu Solanki (2/34) was the most successful bowler for the hosts.
The partnership of Subhranshu and inform Dhuper will hold the key for the visitors, when the last day of the game resumes Monday. If both these young batsmen can see of the first hour with moisture in the pitch, then there is a possibility that Orissa can get the first innings lead like their last game against Tamil Nadu.
Brief scores: Baroda 503; Orissa 316/5 (Subhranshu Senapati 131 batting, Biplab Samantray 55; Vishnu Solanki 2/34). Match to continue.
