Balimela: Failing to endure the torture inflicted on them by a contractor, 19 labourers who had gone to work in Rajahmundry of Andhra Pradesh, Wednesday night managed to reach this town in Malkangiri district after walking 500 km on hilly terrain, a report said.
Orkel police Thursday rescued them and got their health examined at a hospital. Later, a case was registered and the police began a probe.
A contractor of Malkangiri had persuaded 19 people including a minor boy of Dengaguda village of Papadahandi block in Nabarangpur district to work in Rajahmundry. They were made to work under an AP contractor and given little food. The workers were also not given payment after working for several days.
Left with no option, they fled the town and managed to reach Balimela bus stand by walking as they didn’t have a penny to travel by bus or train, it was learnt.
Action would be taken against the contractor who took these people to AP, IIC Jagadish Bara said.
