Khuntuni: A bid to marry off a minor girl was thwarted at Brahmapur village here following the timely intervention of Childline members and police Sunday.
The issue was mutually resolved after the families of the bride and groom agreed to solemnise the marriage after the girl attains adulthood.
According to sources, the minor girl’s marriage was fixed with Dharmananda Rout of Manipur in Dhenkanal district. As per the schedule, the families of the bride and the groom reached Siddhi Narayan shrine at Brahmapur in the afternoon.
Meanwhile, Childline member Miranjali Das got a tip-off about the marriage. Das, along with Childline coordinator Narayan Sukla and the police, reached the village. The officials asked the girl’s parents to show her Aadhaar card. As per the Aadhaar card, the girl’s age was 16 years and seven months. The officials then declared the marriage illegal and stopped it.
The police and Childline members took both the family members to the police station where they submitted a written undertaking that they will formalise the marriage after the girl becomes an adult.
