Bhanjanagar: In a shocking incident, a policeman allegedly beat up a widow after barging into her house for no fault of her at Sanaborisingi village near here in Ganjam district Wednesday.
The assault led to a fracture on the hand of Kamakala Goud (58), wife of late Apurba Goud.
According to sources, Gangpur IIC Chitta Ranjan Behera barged into her house and assaulted her while questioning her on the delay in distributing `23 lakh bank deposits among her five sons which she had inherited as her husband’s nominee, the woman alleged.
Not a single policewoman was accompanying the IIC during the incident, it was learnt. The incident has come at time when International Women’s Day was being celebrated across the globe.
Kamakala narrated the incident to her youngest son Rajendra over phone after the police left. Rajendra admitted her to Bhanjanagar hospital. Later, he met Bhanjanagar SDPO Utkal Keshari Das and lodged a complaint addressed to the superintendent of police in this regard.
Behera, however, rejected the allegation. He claimed a police team, which was on HSC examination duty at Badaborisingi High School, had gone to the woman’s house to intervene in a fight among her sons over sharing of bank deposits.
Sources said Apurba died in October, 2015 leaving behind `23 bank deposits in the name of his wife. Kamakala sons began to fight for the money after the death of their father and pestered her to distribute it among them.
However, the bank authorities delayed transferring the money to Kamakala’s account on some pretext.
Police had to intervene in the matter following which Kamakala submitted a written undertaking stating that she would distribute the money among each of her sons.
But, bank authorities dilly-dallied in transferring the money to her account. Tension was brewing among her sons when the police barged into her house and assaulted her.
A man died in Jagannathprasad police custody in 2015 while Bhanjanagar police had earlier beat up a woman during a search for an accused in Kaindi village. PNN
