Belpahar: A 64-year-old woman became an inspiration for many after she donated her corneas after her death Wednesday. She was identified as Shakuntala Bundia of Gumadera under Belpahar police limits in Jharsuguda district.
According to sources, Shakuntala was the wife of well-know businessman Arjunlal Bundia. Shakuntala took ill a few days back due to her old age. Family members admitted her to the local Jahangir Gandhi Hospital ICU. After undergoing treatment for a few days, Shanktuntala succumbed to her illness.
She had expressed her wish to donate both her eyes after her death to family members. To fulfill her last wish, family members contacted Jharsuguda Marwadi Women Samiti Project Director Nirmala Jalan and Ratna Sourangi for help.
The two helped the family members approach Burla-based eye specialists Loknath Mohanty and Rudraprasad Panda who conducted an operation and took both out both the corneas.
“Two visually-challenged people would have the good luck to get back vision,” said Shakuntala’s son Sapan Bundia. Taking an inspiration from Shakuntala many people pledged to donate their eyes after death. Family members also promised to follow the suit. PNN
