Bhubaneswar: A woman Saturday night jumped into Kuakhai River, on the outskirts of the capital town, in a bid to end her life.
Luckily, locals spotted her in the right time and rescued her in a critical condition. She was then admitted to a private hospital, Mancheswar police said.
While the identity of the woman and the cause of her attempt are yet to be established, it is believed that she is from a nearby area. As her health condition is not good, her statement is yet to be recorded.
Her family members will be informed only after she is able to communicate; a police official said love angle cannot be ruled out as the cause behind the attempt.
According to police sources, it was about 4.30 pm. The traffic on the Kuakhia Bridge was at the pick. The woman aged about 24 came on a scooty and parked her vehicle on the bridge. Before anyone could stop her, she plunged into the river.
As she was weeping, she had attracted the attention of a few bikers who quickly alerted the people after which the locals jumped into the river and rescued her.
However, as the river has less water these days, she fell on the sand bed and got her legs, chest and head hurt badly.
The traffic on the bridge came to crawling for some time following the incident.
It may be noted here that in a similar incident in July this year, a woman had allegedly jumped into Kuakhai River near Hanspal to end her life but was later rescued by fire services officials near Tankapani Road.
Similarly, in another incident, a woman constable also tried to commit suicide by jumping into the same river and later she was rescued by local people.
