Nuapada: A 35-year-old woman was killed while her five-year-old daughter was rendered critical after a portion of wall of their house caved in on them while they were asleep Saturday night at Lachana village under Komna block of Nuapada district.
The deceased has been identified as Lalita Rout (35). The minor girl-Purnima was rescued and is placed under treatment at the district headquarters hospital (DHH) where her condition was stated critical.
According to reports, a house of the family had gutted in a major fire breakout back in 2014 after which the administration had provided them a house under Indira Awas Yojana (IAY).
While her husband, Udhav Rout and father-in-law Pilar Rout worked as bonded labourers in Bengaluru, Lalita stayed with her four minor children in the incomplete IAY house that had weakened due to the prevailing downpour.
As usual, the family went to bed after dinner. Meanwhile, a portion of wall of the house crumbled around 11.30PM. The mother-daughter duo was grievously injured in the incident while other three children luckily survived with minor injuries.
The two were then rushed to the Nuapada district headquarters hospital, where the woman succumbed to her injuries.
Police have registered a case of unnatural death into the incident. The deceased’s husband, who was in Bengaluru, was yet to reach the village till last reports came in.
