Malkangiri, August 11: A tribal married woman was raped Wednesday in broad daylight in full public view in this district but none came to her rescue.
Worse, some of them, instead of preventing the incident, recorded the heinous act on their smart phones and uploaded in social media. The incident, which took place on a road leading to Udupa village under the local police limits, has sent shockwaves across the district.
According to reports, the victim of Udupa village was walking back to her home from a local market Wednesday afternoon when she felt uneasy near MV 84 village. A man spotted her falling down on the ground and cashing in on the opportunity he pounced on the woman.
Her scream for help and all attempts to escape from the clutches of the man didn’t yield any result. Moreover, the passersby kept enjoying the incident and recording the incident. By the time, some youths of the village reached the spot it was too late. Though a villager tried to oppose the wrongdoer, the former was assaulted by the latter.
When asked about the reason behind not lodging a police complaint, the family members of the victim said fear and shame prevented them from filing a case.
While leaders cutting across party lines condemned the incident and sought stringent action against the accused, SP Jagamohan Meena said police are yet to receive a complaint. Meena, however, promised action against the accused following a probe and urged people to stop circulating the video.
