Boinda: A woman and her two-year-old son were killed while her husband was left battling for life after the car the three were travelling skidded off the road and fell down in a pit Friday.
The incident occurred near a sharp turn on Boinda-Athamallik road under Thakurgarh police limits in Angul district. The deceased were identified as Manorama Biswal (28), wife of injured Dhiren Biswal and her son Nilakantha Biswal.
According to reports, the trio was on their way to Athamallik community health centre in a car to examine the health of the baby boy. The vehicle fell into the pit after Biswal lost balance on the wheels while negotiating a sharp turn.
The mother and son died on the spot while locals rescued Biswal and rushed him to district headquarters hospital in Angul. After preliminary treatment, he was referred to Cuttack-based SCB Medical College and Hospital for advanced treatment as his condition worsened, it was learnt.
Angry locals staged a road blockade disrupting traffic movement for over three hours. They sought compensation for the bereaved family members and demanded construction of a speed breaker near the turn.
On being informed, Athamallik tehsildar Dibya Lochan Mohant, Thakurgarh IIC Bibakhya Naik and Athamallick IIC Prasant Kumar Patra reached the spot and brought the situation under control.
A compensation of Rs 20,000 was provided to the kin of the deceased from Red Cross funds. The officials promised further compensation for the family. The agitators relented after the officials promised to put up a wall along the road, a speed breaker and an information plaque to prevent accidents. PNN
