Nayagarh: Police along with a scientific team Thursday seized the burnt remains of a woman who was burnt to death at Jemedeipurpatna village under Daspalla block in Nayagarh district. The deceased was identified as Jayanti, daughter of Dhrubacharan Rout.
Police registered a case based on a complaint by Jayanti’s mother Lily Rout and launched an investigation. Family members said Jayanti was murdered in a pre-planned manner over dowry while rumours had it that she was killed after she came to know of her husband’s illicit affair with a nurse in the Nayagarh district headquarters hospital.
Meanwhile, Jayanti’s husband Prabhat Naik and his family members were absconding after the incident. On the other hand, police in the presence of a magistrate seized the burnt remains of Jayanti and launched a probe. Nayagarh tehsildar alias Magistrate Pratap Chandra Beunra sealed Prabhat’s house.
According to the complainant, Prabhat was earlier married to Jayanti’s cousin 10 years ago. However, family members learnt that she had committed suicide by hanging herself from a fan over unknown reasons.
Shockingly, Prabhat along with his family members had burnt the body and performed the last rites even before her family members reached. Unaware of Prabhat’s evil activities, family members again got Jayanti married to Prabhat.
In a similar condition, Jayanti’s family was alerted that her health was not well. When they reached home to see her, Prabhat’s family had already performed her last rites. Even their neighbours were unaware of their act.
Locals claimed that Prabhat owned a motorbike showroom in Phulbani and lived in a rented house with Jayanti. He had come to his village four days ago. However, under what circumstances Jayanti died remained a mystery.
Prabhat and his family members were on the run while their phones were switched off. We will arrest the accused soon, police said. PNN
