Bhubaneswar, May 2: Yashaswini Sarangi (6.5 points) of DPS, Kalinga emerged champion in the State Schools’ Open Chess Championships, jointly organised by Dipanwita Institute of Study and Activity (DISA) and Orissa State Chess Association (OSCA) here April 30-May 1.
Harshit Mohapatra (Gaurishankar Residential) and Jagdish Kumar Ghadai (DAV Public School, Kalinga) also finished with 6.5 points each but were declared second and third because of an inferior tie-break score.
Meanwhile, Anibesh Mohanty of Stewart School topped the U-8 age group bagging four points while Saswat Soumyabrata (3.5) and Swayam Anirudh Rout (three) finished second and third respectively in the same category.
Sixty nine students from 11 schools took part in the two-day eight-round Swiss tournament.
New body elected
Sekhar Chandra Sahoo (IM) of Ganjam was elected as the new president of the All Orissa Chess Association (AOCA) in the AGM at KIIT University complex, Sunday.
The other elected officials were Ranjan Mohanty, Cuttack and Itee Samanta, Jagatsinghpur (both vice-president), Krushna Kumar Sharma (Ganjam, secretary), Manoranjan Panda (Balasore, joint secretary, Gobind Chandra Mohapatra (Kendrapara, treasurer). Other elected executive members are: Bhabesh Mohanty, Subhash Chandra Sahu, Shankar Mishra and Debabrata Bhatta.
Eves finish 4th
The Orissa women’s team finished fourth in the Hockey India National Senior Women’s Championship (A Division) in Bangalore, Sunday. Orissa lost their bronze medal game 1-3 to Madhya Pradesh. Asmita Barla (32nd) scored the only goal for Orissa.
Colts victorious
Orissa junior women’s team registered a convincing 3-1 win over Madhya Pradesh Hockey Academy in a Pool D game of the Hockey India National Junior Women’s Championships in Ranchi, Monday. Orissa will next meet Delhi, Wednesday.
Nimabati Singh (20th), Mariana Kujur (45th) and Elima Minz (52nd) were the scorers for Orissa.
