Khuntuni: The journey of a youth to Mumbai by train to earn a living for his elderly parents and minor siblings turned fatal after he fell of the moving vehicle.
The body of Manoj Das, 27, of Erakana in Mahanga police limits in Cuttack was found on the tracks by railway staff metres away from Khuntuni station Wednesday morning.
Manoj had decided to ensure his poverty-stricken parents and siblings get a square meal throughout the year by going to Mumbai to earn money.
Das along with his two friends from the village and another from the neighbouring Paikerapur had reached Cuttack and boarded Lokamanya Tilak Express Tuesday at 11.30pm.
Wednesday morning, some railway employees spotted the body on the tracks and contacted the railway police. GRP assistant sub inspector Ramesh Chandra Paltasingh rushed to the spot and found a cellphone near the body. After browsing through the contacts in the phone, the police ascertained that it was Das’s body.
Sources said Manoj was the only earning member of his family. He was going to Mumbai to earn a living. However, his tragic death has devastated the family.
The railway police are yet to ascertain the circumstances leading to Das’s death. The police sent the body for postmortem and registered a case of unnatural death.
