Bhubaneswar: Govind Poddar’s (64, 42b, 5×4, 4×6) valiant knock went in vain as Orissa lost to Jharkhand by eight wickets in a East Zone league match of Inter-State T20 championships at Ranchi, Tuesday. The loss ended Orissa’s chances of qualifying for the T20 Super League.
Orissa finished with eight points from four games and finished third in the group. Bengal, who defeated Assam by six wickets qualified with 16 points winning all their four games while Jharkhand joined them in the Super League with 12 points.
Opting to bat first, Orissa went on losing wickets at regular intervals. Except for Govind’s knock, none of the others played an innings of substance and Orissa were bowled out for 123 in 19.4 overs.
Monu Kumar (4/14) bowled well for Jharkhand and was ably aided by Jaskaran (2/30) and Atul Singh Kunwar (2/27). Shahbaaz Nadeem and India discard Varun Aaron took one wicket apiece.
In reply, Jharkhand had no difficulty in reaching the target with Ishan Kishan (51, 38b, 5×4, 3×6) and Ishank Jaggi (40 retired hurt, 25b, 5×4, 1×6) batting well.
Brief scores: Orissa 123 (Govind Poddar 64; Monu Kumar 4/14) lost to Jharkhand 129/2 in 16.4 overs (Ishan Kishan 51, Ishank Jaggi 40 retired hurt) by eight wickets.
Eves lose narrowly
Orissa eves went down narrowly by one run Tuesday, in a thriller against Chhattisgarh in a match of the Senior Women’s T20 League at Chennai.
Orissa bowlers did a pretty good job to restrict their opponents to 104 for four in 20 overs after Chhattisgarh decided to bat. Manpreet Kaur (28 n o), Shivi Pandey (24) and Priya Verma (20) made useful contributions to the side’s total. Rasanara Parwin took two wickets for Orissa.
Orissa eves started disastrously and at one stage were 57 for four. However, Sarita Meher (42 n o, 44b, 2×4) took them close but not over the line.
Brief scores: Chhattisgarh 104/4 (Manpreet Kaur 28 n o; Rasanara Parwin 2/18) beat Orissa 103/8 (Sarita Meher 42 n o) by one run.
