Cuttack: The district and sessions judge (DSJ) court will frame charges against suspected al Qaeda in Indian Subcontinent (AQIS) operative Abdur Rehman August 10.
Rehman was produced before the district and sessions judge Satyanarayan Mishra Monday after the case was transferred from Salipur judicial magistrate first class (JMFC) court.
During the hearing, Rehman appealed to the court to issue photocopies of statements of two witnesses which were earlier recorded by the Salipur JMFC court under Section 164 of CrPC. However, public prosecutor Ajit Kumar Patnaik opposed Rehman’s appeal.
Patnaik contended that according to section 44 of Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act, the statements of the witnesses can be concealed. “Making the statements public will reveal the identities of the witnesses. Therefore, I appeal to the court not to provide the photocopies of the statements to Rehman and hence reject his plea,” Patnaik said.
The court also directed the police to produce Rehman before it August 10. The court will frame charges against Rehman the same day. Besides, the court has scheduled the hearing on Rehman’s appeal to July 26.
Notably, Rehman was arrested from Paschimakaccha in Jagatpur police limits December 15, 2015. The police had seized a large number of CDs, books, cell phones, passports, tablets and important documents from his possession.
