Anugola: A local court sentenced ten persons to life imprisonment Friday for the 2021 murder of Jagannath Senapati, 22, alias Jagan, a watchman at Derjang Dam in Anugola district. The court found them guilty of murdering Jagan in an organised attack stemming from previous enmity.
District and Sessions Court Judge Hrushikesh Acharya pronounced the sentence based on the statements of 19 witnesses and evidence presented during the trial. The convicts were identified as Jitendra Sahu, Man tu Sahu, Jitendra Biswal, Bibhuti Sahu, Tarani Sahu, Chhabi Sahu, Gobinda Sahu, Mamali Sahu, Subasini Sahu and Basanti Sahu, all from Rantalai village under Sadar police limits.
According to the case, Jagan was allegedly called by a youth on the pretext of attending a feast. Jagan, wearing a lungi and raincoat, went towards the dam on a motorcycle with the youth. After they travelled about 200 metres along the road from the Ran talai side towards the dam, the accused allegedly attacked Jagan with swords, sticks and axes. Jagan suffered a deep injury to the right side of his head. The attackers allegedly left him bleeding at the spot, where he later died. During the trial, the court examined 19 witnesses. At the time of the verdict, six of the accused were out on bail, while four remained in custody.
