Cuttack: Doctors at SCB Medical College and Hospital appear to be in a dilemma and are unable to decide the next course of action as a woman is determined to donate her only functional kidney to save her son’s life.
The woman, Manasi Mohapatra (56), is trying hard to persuade the doctors to transplant her kidney to her son, Jatindra (30), who is suffering from critical renal disease.
Jatindra, a native of Kadalibana in Pattamundai police limits of Kendrapara district, is suffering from kidney disease and is undergoing treatment in the nephrology department of SCBMCH. Following dialysis of the patient, doctors have recommended kidney transplantation. Soon after, his mother submitted an affidavit to donate her kidney to save her son’s life. After analysing all the legal issue, the authorisation committee of the SCBMCH had issued a no objection certificate (NOC) to Manasi for the kidney transplantation.
Meanwhile, the doctors conducted the measurements of Manasi’s kidneys and were shocked to find that one of her kidneys was on the verge of damage. “One of her kidneys is small in size and not functioning properly. It will become non-functional after sometime,” the doctors said.
According to medical guidelines, in such cases the partially damaged kidney of the donor is transplanted. However, Manasi is determined to donate her functional kidney to her son fearing that her son may not survive for long with the partially damaged kidney.
“I have reached 56. It does not matter if I die. But I wish my son lives a long life with my kidney,” the anxious mother said.
Although the doctors at the hospital are trying to persuade Manasi to give up her stand, the lady is still determined to donate her functional kidney to her son. A meeting of the authorisation committee was called to arrive at a decision on the issue at SCBMCH, Thursday. However, the doctors failed to persuade the woman who selflessly defended her decision.
Speaking about it, SCB superintendent Shyama Kanungo said, “People should learn from Manasi what mother’s love is. This is vital because, children often treat their parents as burden when they become old. There are several instances of elderly parents committing suicide after being shunned by their family, while in other cases they are leading the life of a destitute in old age homes. Manasi is a living example of a mother’s love and affection for her children. She is selflessly trying to devote her life to save the life of her son.”
