Rourkela: In a heart-wrenching incident, two minor sisters were killed while their mother sustained critical injuries after a portion of their house wall caved in on them while they were asleep after dinner late Friday night.
The incident was reported from Malgodown slum under Uditnagar police limits of Rourkela in Sundargarh district.
The deceased sisters have been identified as Soumya Barik (7) and Sujata Barik (5), daughters of Pintu Barik.
The injured mother of the two girls was rescued and admitted to a local hospital where his condition remained critical while the filing of this report.
According to sources, the incident occurred late Friday night when the girls were asleep with their parents inside the house.
All of a sudden, the muddy walls of their thatched house that had got soaked and weakened due to heavy rain over the past few days, collapsed on them.
Hearing the noise, neighbours rushed to the spot. However, one of the girls had died while her sister and mother were critically injured. Later, the other girl succumbed while being taken to a hospital. Luckily, Pintu survived without any injuries.
After getting information, police rushed to the spot and launched a probe. The bodies were seized and sent for autopsy.
“I went to the spot at around 3 am when I came to know about the incident. On reaching there, I saw the girls were trapped under the wall. One of them died on the spot and another succumbed to the injuries while she was being taken to the hospital,” said a relative of Pintu Barik.
