Bhapur: Residents of Chakradharprasad village under Fategarh police limits in Nayagarh district beat up a youth black and blue and handed him over to police on charges of impersonating as a police officer and defrauding Rs 1.60 lakh from a girl on the pretext of marriage, police said Tuesday.
The accused was identified as Santosh Pradhan (34), son of Chintamani Pradhan of Barapada village under Bhadrak rural police limits.
Police rescued Santosh in a critical condition and admitted him to the Bhapur hospital and later arrested him. Police have registered a case on the basis of a complaint by the girl’s mother and produced him in Khandapara court Tuesday evening.
Police said Pradhan befriended a girl in the village by identifying himself as a police officer and developed a relationship with her promising marriage. The girl, a Plus III pass out from local college, believed his words and expected him to marry her.
Pradhan soon developed intimacy with the girl’s family and started visiting their house frequently. He promised to marry the girl and borrowed Rs 1.60 lakh from her mother. He however, kept on avoiding marriage with the girl on some pretext or other.
Soon, the girl’s family members began doubting his intentions and when he visited their house again Monday they demanded the money he had taken from them. As he failed to return the money or keep his promise to marry the girl, the girl’s enraged family members and villagers caught hold of him and beat him up black and blue before handing him over to police.
