Cuttack: The state police observed the 59th state-level Police Commemoration Day on the State Police Headquarters’ premises, here Sunday.
Director General of Police (DGP) Rajendra Prasad Sharma, who graced the event as the chief guest, paid homage to the martyrs who laid down their lives in line of duty. Besides, the DGP also expressed solidarity with the families of the martyrs.
Apart from observing a two-minute silence for the departed, the policemen paid floral tributes as well as gun salutes to the martyrs. Inspector General (IG) Asit Kumar Panigrahi read out the names of 414 jawans, including that of constable Sanjay Majhi, who have laid down their lives this year.
The martyrs included six from Andhra Pradesh, one each from Gujarat and Andaman & Nicobar, two each from Haryana and Assam, 10 from Bihar, 25 from Chhattisgarh, 13 from Delhi, 46 from Jammu and Kashmir, seven from Jharkhand and 15 from Karnataka.
Besides, six jawans from Kerala, eight from Madhya Pradesh, three each from Manipur and Maharashtra, one each from Meghalaya, Rajasthan, Tripura and Sikkim, two each from Tamil Nadu, Telangana and Uttarakhand, 18 from West Bengal, eight from Assam Rifles, 42 from BSF, nine from CISF and 27 jawans from CRPF were among those who sacrificed their lives for the cause of the country.
The DGP felicitated families of eight martyrs – Manoranjan Lenka and RN Mahakud of CRPF, Bhola Nayak, Dandapani Mishra, Seikh Samiruddin, Partha Ranjan Behera, Suresh Chandra Dhal and Sibasis Panda of Odisha Police.
Notably, the Police Commemoration Day is observed October 21 to commemorate the sacrifice of 10 CRPF jawans who were martyred in a Chinese attack at Ladakh in 1959.
