Cuttack, March 25: The National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) has directed the state government to conduct a fresh inquiry into the alleged involvement of a BJD lawmaker in molestation and abduction of a woman in November 2013.
The chief secretary and director general of police (DGP) have been asked to initiate a Crime Branch/CID probe and submit an action-taken report within four weeks, informed human rights activist Subash Mohapatra, who had filed the petition with the commission in this regard.
According to the petitioner, the woman had approached ruling Biju Janata Dal (BJD) legislator from Bari, Debasish Nayak, at his official residence here November 13, 2013, to complain about the irregularities in distribution of relief materials meant for flood affected people. However, the woman was tortured by the legislator and his associates.
The woman, a resident of Ratalanga in Bari, had alleged that the MLA and his associates also threatened her of dire consequences if she dared to lodge a complaint with the police against them.
The accused abducted her and kept her in confinement after the woman lodged a complaint with Mahila police here.
She tried to escape November 15, 2013, but was caught and abducted by the MLA’s associates. However, she was rescued by police in the same month. Several accused were arrested by police in the case.
Nayak had, however, denied any involvement in the molestation and abduction of the woman, the petitioner said.
