Cuttack: Taking a step towards a clean and green Silver City, the Cuttack Municipal Corporation (CMC) would adopt ‘3R formula — Reduce, Reuse and Recycle’ to deal with the ever-growing mounds of garbage.
According to sources, a waste recycling plant would be set up near Satichoura dump yard. “An ultramodern shredding machine will be installed at the plant. The machine will segregate plastic from other wastes before powdering it. The powdered plastic will be used as raw material for road construction and roofing. Likewise, waste other than plastic will be buried in an attempt to convert it into compost, which could in turn be used for cropping as and when required,” a senior CMC official said after a meeting at the Town Hall here Tuesday.
The meeting was attended by senior officials of Swachh Bharat Mission (Urban), CMC, apart from several self-help groups (SHGs) to ensure proper waste management.
According to CMC commissioner Sarat Chandra Nayak, the Silver City generates about 150 tonne waste a month. And in order to convert it into compost, they would have to bury it. “To bury the waste, we’ve identified a few parks in the Millennium City,” Nayak said.
According to Mayor Meenakshree Behera, the civic body has been facing inconvenience in collecting waste from nook and corner of the city owing to several unfavourable conditions like narrow roads, which do not facilitate easy entry of the trash picking vehicles. Hence, they would rope in the SHGs for collection of the trash from the yet to be reachable places in the Silver City, Behera said.
Meanwhile, CMC Health Standing Committee chairperson Ranjan Biswal said maintaining sanitation is a continuous process. “And if the initiative is fruitful, then Cuttack can up its position in the Swachh survey,” Biswal said.
Meanwhile, corporator Ranjita Biswal called for a cooperation between the civic body and the public for success of the 3R formula.
