Koraput: Koraput district Monday bagged the prestigious National Water Awards 2018 for its performance on recharging groundwater and creation of water resources.
Union Water Resources Minister Nitin Gadkari presented the Award at an event held at Mavalankar Hall, Constitution Club of India, New Delhi.
Koraput district bagged the second place at the national level and Watershed Mission project director Bhawani Shankar Kalo received this award.
Kalo received two awards pertaining to water conservation. Minister of State for Water Resources Arjun Ram Meghawal and secretary of the department Satyapal Singh along with other senior officials were present.
Notably, the volume of groundwater in Koraput district is 0.0677 BCM and volume of surface water is 2.0910 BCM, which is about 30 times more than the groundwater. Hence, Koraput Watershed Mission is able to successfully utilise water through wells and check-dams at various locations in the district.
Watershed Mission project director said, “Under the direct guidance of Koraput District Collector K Sudarshan Chakravarthy the Watershed Mission in the district has taken up several useful programmes.
