Buguda: In a shocking incident, a youth allegedly killed his father over a cellphone at Gaudiaborada village under Buguda police limits in Ganjam district on the wee hours of Monday.
The deceased has been identified as Ramchandra Maharatha (60), father of the accused Sanjay Maharatha.
According to sources, Sanjay worked as a labourer in Surat and had come to village for vacation 10 days back. Over some reason, Sanjay’s father Ramchandra hid his cellphone.
An argument broke out between the father-son duo over the petty issue this morning after Sanjay asked him mobile phone back. Situation took an ugly turn after the youth attacked his father with a wooden plank.
Family members rescued Ramchandra in a critical condition and rushed him to Bhanjanagar sub-divisional hospital. Later, after preliminary treatment, he was referred to MKCG Medical College and Hospital in Berhampur after his condition deteriorated further. However, he succumbed to the injuries in the hospital during treatment, IIC SS Mandata said.
Soon after the mishap, the youth fled the spot. On being informed, police reached the spot and sent the body to a local hospital for post-mortem.
Reportedly, police have registered a case and detained the accused Sanjay while a probe into the incident was launched.
