Bhubaneswar: The low pressure area over Southeast Bay of Bengal has concentrated into a depression over the same region. It is likely to intensify further into a deep depression in the next 24 hours and a cyclone in the following 12 hours, the IMD said in a forecast, Saturday.
The storm has been named ‘Fani and it is currently positioned about 1,400 km southeast of Chennai and 1,610 km southeast of Machilipatnam. Even though it’s current speed is only five kilometres per hour, it will increase substantially as the depression deepens.
By April 30 evening, it is likely to touch north coast of Tamil Nadu and south coast of Andhra Pradesh. The IMD has issued a red alert notice in the two states. During ‘Fani’s’ land fall, Tamil Nadu, Pondicherry and districts of south Andhra Pradesh are likely to experience heavy rainfall.
Due to the impact of the cyclone, the sky over Odisha will remain overcast. A clear picture on the movement of the cyclone and its subsequent movement can be assessed April 29, according the director of the IMD regional centre here, HR Biswas.
The IMD has also issued heat wave warnings for seven districts of Odisha for the next three days starting April 27. Temperatures are more likely to cross the 46 degrees Celsius mark in the seven districts of Angul, Bolangir, Jharsuguda, Malkangiri, Sundargarh, Sambalpur and Sonepur.
Temperatures have gone up by two degrees Celsius in most districts of Odisha. The temperature is hovering around 40 degrees Celsius mark in 10 districts of the state.
Titlagarh at 44 degree Celsius Friday recorded the highest temperature in the state. Temperatures at Bolangir, Malkangiri, Angul, Jharsuguda, Sambalpur, Sundragarh, Hirakud, Bhawanipatna and Phulbani districts hovered around the 40-43 degree Celsius marks.
Keeping the weather condition in view, the weathermen have cautioned people particularly children and elderly ones to remain indoors during the day. Youngsters have been advised not go out between the peak day hours. If they have to venture out, they should drink plenty of fluids and adopt protective measures like using an umbrella or covering their head with a wet cloth.
