Bhubaneswar: Following continuous rains in upper catchment areas for the past few days, Mahanadi river experienced low-level flooding in the lower basin Friday, said a source.
The water level has receded a little in Brahmani river, but Baitarani river is still in spate, the source further said.
According to the source, around 6.97 lakh cusecs of water was flowing Friday morning at Mundali in Mahanadi river. However, the water level has been receding since 11pm last night.
The source also informed that the swelling of the Mahanadi River and its branches has led to the inundation of many villages in the Banki and Athagarh regions. Waterlogging has been observed in areas like Nayagarh, Boudh, and Subarnapur. Substantial portions of paddy fields in as many as nine gram panchayats under Banki and Tigiria blocks now lie submerged due to floodwaters. In Nayagarh district many roads and bridges have also been submerged.
According to the source, near Teramanpur under the Kujanga block, the breach is of approximately 20 feet in the Mahanadi river, resulting in inundation of Kotasahi village due to floodwaters.
The state government has instructed Collectors from all districts to maintain a state of full preparedness to effectively address any potential crises stemming from the ongoing flood situation, informed the source.
According to the SRC (Special Relief Commissioner) Satyabrata Sahu amid the threat of flooding, 106 teams comprising NDRF (8), ODRAF (13) and Fire Services (85), were rushed to different districts of the state Thursday.
