Govt boosts medical education with new appointments

Bhubaneswar: In a significant move to strengthen medical education and healthcare services, the state government has appointed 91 assistant professors across 23 broad speciality disciplines and seven assistant professors in six super speciality disciplines in its government medical colleges. In addition, 38 professors and 27 associate professors have been promoted through departmental processes.

According to Health and Family Welfare department officials, the new appointments include 15 specialists and four super specialists at SCB Medical College and Hospital, Cuttack; 19 specialists and three super specialists at MKCG Medical College and Hospital, Brahmapur; six specialists at Pandit Raghunath Murmu Medical College and Hospital, Baripada; one specialist at SLN Medical College and Hospital, Koraput; six specialists at Fakir Mohan Medical College and Hospital, Balasore; one specialist at Bhima Bhoi Medical College and Hospital, Bolangir; two specialists at Shri Jagannath Medical College and Hospital, Puri; and six specialists at Government Medical College, Sundargarh.

Additionally, the appointments include five specialists at Dharanidhar Medical College and Hospital, Keonjhar; seven specialists at Saheed Rendo Majhi Medical College and Hospital, Bhawanipatna; two specialists at Maharaja Jajati Keshari Medical College and Hospital, Jajpur; eight specialists at Pabitra Mohan Pradhan Medical College and Hospital, Talcher; five specialists at Government MCH, Phulbani; and eight specialists at the Post Graduate Institute of Medical Education and Research and Capital Hospital, Bhubaneswar.

In addition, 38 professors and 27 associate professors have been appointed in the state’s medical colleges through departmental promotions. Besides, medical education and clinical services at Acharya Harihar Post Graduate Institute of Cancer, Cuttack, have been strengthened with the appointment of 10 super-specialist assistant professors in Surgical Oncology, Gynaecological Oncology, Head & Neck Surgery, Medical Oncology, and Uro-Oncology. Furthermore, one professor and two associate professors have been promoted at the institute through departmental processes.

Health and Family Welfare department officials said steps are underway to appoint more specialists and super-specialists in the state’s government medical colleges and hospitals. The batch-wise graduation of medicos from these campuses is expected to meet the growing demand for doctors and specialists, ensuring quality universal healthcare across Odisha.

Medical education and training in the state have been further strengthened with the posting of new assistant professors (specialists and super-specialists) and the functionalisation of two new medical colleges in 2025: Government Medical College & Hospital, Phulbani and Pabitra Mohan Pradhan Medical College & Hospital, Talcher. With these additions, the total number of government medical colleges in Odisha has risen from 12 to 14.
