Banki: Tension prevailed at Banki sub-divisional hospital following the death of a baby due to alleged medical negligence Monday morning.
The deceased was identified as Om Barik, the 18-month-old son of Munindra Barik and Rashmita Barik of Ramchandrapur under Dampada block in Cuttack district.
Family members admitted Om to the hospital early Monday morning after he was taken ill. However, they allegedly found the on-duty doctor Mamata Mohanty sleeping in her cabin. Before they could wake her up for help, the security guard reportedly sent them away.
By the time, the doctor woke up and attended to the child, his condition worsened and he breathed died, family members claimed.
They accused the doctor of negligence while their relatives staged a demonstration on the hospital premises. The police had to intervene to bring the situation under control.
When contacted, Dr Mamata denied the allegations and claimed that all steps were taken to save the baby.
“We provided him with oxygen and referred the case to SCB Medical College and Hospital after the baby’s condition worsened. However, he died before being shifted to Cuttack,” she added.
