Cuttack, June 23: The release on bail Thursday of Sulesh Sahu, an aide of the Dhalasamanta brothers, led to fears of a gang war and fresh cases of extortion and tender fixing in the city here.
The soft attitude of police towards high-profile criminals and poor representation by the public prosecutor had helped Sahu to get bail from Orissa High Court Wednesday, alleged residents of the city.
Sahu was arrested in connection with tender fixing and extortion. Police had seized three guns and 11 bullets from his residence. Two cases were registered against him.
The High Court had granted conditional bail to Sahu after the public prosecutor informed the court that police had completed interrogation of the accused, sources said. The public prosecutor also said police do not need Sahu for further interrogation, sources said.
“The arrest of Sushil Dhalasamanta, Sushant Dhalasamanta and 30 of their associates had created a sense of relief. The High Court has granted bail to Sahu and Yuga Prakash Kanungo because of the poor representation by the police and the government advocate,” said a few residents.
Some lawyers also raised questions over the role of the police and public prosecutor in the release of Sahu. “At least 15 associates of the Dhalasamantas are still beyond the reach of police. However, the public prosecutor virtually helped Sahu get bail by informing the court that police do not require the accused for further interrogation,” said a lawyer.
Deputy commissioner of police Sanjeev Arora said they are analysing all the aspects that led to bail for Sahu.
