Bhubaneswar: People of the state had a respite from the blistering heat Sunday with the mercury coming down sharply in most parts of the state.
Temperatures were 40 degree Celsius or more in only eight towns of the state. Bolangir was the hottest place in the state at 42.5 degree Celsius, followed by Sambalpur at 42.3 degree Celsius, Jharusuguda (41.6), Hirakud, Sonepur and Bhawanipatna (41.2), Sundergarh (40.5) and Titlagarh (40).
Temperature in the coastal areas came down considerably following light rain. The maximum temperature in Cuttack and Bhubaneswar was 36.5 degree Celsius and 38.4 degree Celsius respectively, according to the Met office.
The temperature would come down further as there is a possibility of more rainfall in the state from May 12, the local Met office predicted.
“A trough line has formed over Rajasthan. This has stretched up to the Orissa coast and has remained at the mean sea level. Besides, a cyclonic circulation has formed over Jharkhand extending up to 1.5 km from the surface level. As a result of these synoptic conditions, there would be rain or thunderstorm at one or two places in the state for three days from May 9,” said Bhubaneswar Meteorological Centre director in-charge, Mamata Yadav. There would be comparatively more rainfall with thunderstorms in some parts of the state for four days from May 12, Yadav said.
The office of the Special Relief Commissioner (SRC) said it has not received any report on death because of sunstroke Sunday. SRC had till Saturday received death reports of 168 persons because of sunstroke from different parts of the state. Of these, death in 16 cases has been confirmed to be because of sunstroke.
