Bhubaneswar, Jan 10: Sumit Ojha of DAV Public School, Pokhariput put up a dominant show to emerge champions of the State School’s Open Chess Championships. He garnered eight points from nine rounds to take the top honours.
Jagadish Ghadai of DAV Public School, Kalinga Nagar secured the second position with 7.5 points in his kitty. Piyush Kumar Chinara of Stewart School, Bhubaneswar finished third with seven points. Ashraya Das of DAV Public School, Pokhariput also grabbed the same number of points, but had to be satisfied with the fourth place finish on the basis of tie-breaker. A total of 67 players from 17 schools across the state participated in the tournament.
Other prizes: (U-8) Anibesh Mohanty, Saswat Soumyabrata, Baibhav Ghose (U-10) Aryan Rajguru, Asvin Abhinabas, Aditya Nayak (U-12) Snehanka Mohapatra, Sai Sankatmochan, Sujit Kumar Dash (U-14) Amrutanshu Mohapatra, Prayas Tripathy, Smruti Ranjan Swain (girls’) Greesma Gitika, Rashmiprava Das, Arpita, Rath.
Ganta-Das triumphs
J Ganta and Gyana Das pair clinched the men’s doubles title of Utkal Orissa Open Tennis Tournament after beating N Das and P Bakshi in the final here Sunday. Ganta and Das pair got the better of Das and Bakshi duo 8-4.
Huge win for Dhenkanal
Dhenkanal registered a massive 164 runs win over Rayagada in a match of the Sumit Bose Memorial OCA U-16 Inter-District Cricket Tournament at the KIIT Ground here Sunday.
Opting to bat first, Dhenkanal scored 232 in 48.1 overs with contributions from Guptesh Patnaik (57) and Furudatta Patnaik (48). In reply Rayagada were bowled out for a paltry 68 in 16.3 overs. Akash Puhan (5/28) bowled well for Dhenkanal to return with a five wicket haul. Among others, Deogarh,Nuapada, Bargarh also scripted huge wins.
