Bhubaneswar: A day after the Directorate of Revenue Intelligence (DRI) seized fake currency notes of Rs 3lakh from a train passenger at Khurda Road Junction, the agency handed over its probe to the National Investigation Agency (NIA) Sunday.
During the initial probe, it was known that the accused Simar hailed from Pahad Gav in Sahebganj district of Jharkhand. Simar confessed he had collected two bunches of fake Rs 2000 notes from a person at Kaliachak in Malda district, who had smuggled in the fake notes from Bangladesh.
Suspecting the hands of a huge racket, the Bhubaneswar regional unit of the DRI handed over the case to the NIA.
DRI sleuths had seized fake Indian currency notes after zeroing in on a passenger travelling by the Kamakhya-Yesvantpur Express at Khurda Road railway station here Saturday.
Kaliachak is infamous for smuggling in of fake Indian currency notes. It is suspected that a major gang is behind this operation. A former top police official has urged the NIA to notify the foreign ministries of both India and Bangladesh after carrying out further probe.
