Kendrapara, Oct 1: An atmosphere of panic prevailed at a government run primary school after a gun-toting hooligan entered the premises and unleashed a reign of terror Wednesday afternoon.
Headmistress of Senior Basic Government School at Kusiapala, Saraswati Kundu, said Bhamara Patra, a man of nearby Khasapadia, came to the school in an inebriated state while the closing prayer session was underway. Two of his associates stood outside the school’s gate. Bhamara then terrorised Zilla Parishad teacher Akhaya Kumar Pothal brandishing a revolver and threatened to kill him.
As Pothal screamed for help, other teachers came to his rescue but Bhamara also terrorised them and detained them at gunpoint. Students who were attending the prayer session got frightened. They, however, managed to escape from the school through a narrow lane connecting the main road. Later, as guardians rushed to the school to take stock of the situation, Bhamara fled the scene, Kundu said.
The headmistress informed the matter to the block education officer of Derabish and the IIC of Sadar police station.
Addition BEO Akhaya Kumar Swain and a police team led by IIC Biranchi Bag rushed to the spot. Locals threatened to lock the school Thursday unless the hooligan is arrested. Swain conducted an inquiry and asked the headmistress, the teacher and guardians to lodge separate FIRs against the accused at Sadar police station.
Bag said police are yet to receive an FIR in this regard, but steps are being taken to arrest the accused.
Meanwhile, guardians said they are worried over the security of their wards in the school after the incident.
