Angul: A youth Wednesday assaulted a girl with an iron bar after she spurned his advances at Kumurisingha under Balimi police limits in Dhenkanal district.
The girl suffered critical injuries on head and limbs and was admitted to a hospital at Hindol by family members. She was later shifted to the district headquarters hospital here after her condition worsened.
Doctors attending to the girl advised her family to shift her to a Cuttack hospital. They said her condition was critical due to profuse bleeding from head. The incident has spread shockwaves in the area.
The incident occurred when the girl, a Plus-II second year student of a local college, was returning home on a bicycle with her friends. Accused Jilu of Balimi area along with an accomplice came on a bike and assaulted her with an iron bar.
As she fell off the bicycle, Jilu went on hitting her with the bar.
Sources said the girl was often waylaid by Jilu while going to college. Jilu would propose the girl only to be rejected by her.
Three months ago, Jilu waylaid her while she was returning home from college. This time, the girl slapped him.
Embarrassed Jilu left for Mumbai and returned a few days back. He somehow managed to get the telephone number of the girl’s residence and rang her up frequently.
The girl’s father pulled him up for harassing his daughter but that failed to bring any change in Jilu’s mind, the sources said. PNN
