Basudevpur: In a shocking incident, a man Sunday night hacked his wife to death with a pickaxe while she was asleep on the suspicion that she had an extramarital affair with a fellow villager.
The deceased was identified as Jayanti Barik (28), wife of the accused Prafulla Barik of a slum near Khaparapada village under this block in Bhadrak district. The accused later surrendered before the police with the blood-stained weapon he had used for the crime.
“My wife had an illicit affair with another married man of the village. I came to know of it through some obscene videos, chat and phone recordings. Losing my cool, I killed her,” confessed Barik before the police.
According to police, Barik was working as a security guard in Hirakud dam area. Later, he shifted his base and left to work at Dhamara Port since past one month.
Meanwhile, he marked some changes in his wife’s behavior after getting calls from a co-villager on her mobile phone. He suspected his wife was having an illicit affair with the man while he was working in Hirakud dam area.
Furious, he hatched a plan to kill her. As per his plan, he hacked her to death with a pickaxe while the woman was sleeping late Sunday night.
Meanwhile, Jayanti’s family members accused Barik of killing their daughter for dowry. They alleged Barik was inflicting torture on Jayanti for dowry since marriage.
Basudevpur additional tehsildar along with a scientific team, sniffer dogs and local police reached the village and launched a probe. Police seized the body and sent it for post-mortem.
