Bhubaneswar: A team of Manipur Police arrived here Thursday to gather information on the mysterious death of L Poumai (22), whose body was found hanging on the premises of an OAS officer’s residence in Unit VI here December 2.
SDPO of Imphal West district, A Ghanashyam Sharma, met twin-city Police Commissioner Dr Rajendra Prasad Sharma and discussed the death case of Poumai, a resident of Senapati district in Manipur, that was initially believed to be suicide.
Ghanashyam told journalists that he was here to coordinate with the commissionerate police in the investigations and to give them information related to the case. Poumai’s elder brother, Angelus, and Guwahati High Court lawyer Ashipri Zho also met the police commissioner along with Ghanashyam.
“We told the police commissioner that we are not happy with their investigation. We also told him that we are not satisfied with Poumai’s post-mortem report,” Zho said.
“We have urged the police commissioner to conduct the post-mortem again, this time in front of a magistrate, a panel of doctors and Poumai’s family members. We have also urged him to ensure an officer of additional SP rank investigates this case,” added Zho.
The police commissioner told journalists that an officer of the additional DCP rank probing the case would submit a report within three days. “Post-mortem will be conducted this time in front of a magistrate and a panel of doctors. Earlier, a UD case was registered, but a case under Section 302 of IPC was registered after Angelus alleged his brother was murdered. However, the initial post-mortem report from Capital Hospital suggests Poumai died by hanging himself,” Sharma said.
Giving details about the case, Sharma said: “We are probing why Poumai came to Orissa. According to the preliminary investigation, two locals had spotted him roaming near railway tracks in Balugaon area November 30. They then informed about him to the Superintendent of Railway Police. As Poumai was injured, RPF officials took him to a nearby hospital. Poumai, however, left the hospital and came to the railway station again. The RPF officials again took him to the hospital. Poumai was shifted to Capital Hospital in an ambulance later November 30. He was at Capital Hospital till December 1 evening. On the intervening night of December 1 and 2, he left the hospital against the medical advice issued to him.”
Sources said Poumai’s mental condition was not stable and that he had boarded a train from Dimapur November 27 to visit his elder brother in Bangalore.
Poumai, an excellent volley-ball player, had called his brother after leaving for Bangalore and later told him about some undesirable passengers on the train, said sources. Poumai had reportedly fallen from a train in Balugaon November 30 after being drugged and looted on the train, they added. Poumai is believed to have boarded a train for Orissa from Visakhapatnam.
