Udala: In a shocking incident, a woman reportedly buried her newborn boy alive in a cow dung pit after her delivery over unknown reasons at Dhipasahi village near Sarat in Mayurbhanj district.
She was identified as Masuri Singh, wife of Hindu Singh. While the incident occurred Wednesday night, the matter came to the fore after locals alerted the police Friday evening after foul smell emanated from the newborn’s body, buried in a cow dung pit.
Police exhumed the body and sent it for autopsy while a probe was on.
According to reports, Masuri Singh was pregnant and had gone to her father’s house. Later, she delivered a baby boy June 20 night and buried him alive in a cow dung pit. While locals claimed that woman purportedly killed the newborn and hid it in a container after delivery. She then took the body and buried it in the cow dung pit after everyone went to sleep June 20 night.
Hindu Singh, the woman’s husband who works in Kerala, returned home June 21. He came to know about the incident during his visit to his in-laws’ house after locals informed him about the whole incident.
No exact reason was ascertained as to why would she kill her newborn and bury him while many rumours made round in the area.
Some villagers claimed that as her husband stayed long in Kerala, she had married another man in the area and the baby was from that wedlock. She had allegedly buried the baby to save herself from public embarrassment.
Hindu said his wife has admitted to having killed the baby and buried the body.
However, the woman refuted the allegations of the baby being alive. She claimed she buried it as it was a stillborn baby.
“I had gone to attend nature’s call around 4 am, Wednesday. In the meantime, I delivered a baby boy. Finding no way to carry the stillborn baby back home, I buried him in the cow dung pit,” said Masuri.
A probe is on and necessary action will be taken after the probe, police said.
