Bhubaneswar: A convict lodged at the Special Jail in Jharpada here died under mysterious circumstances Friday morning. The deceased was identified as Gadadhar Sahoo, 57, of Badatota village under the Jatni police stations limits in Khurda.
Sahoo has been lodged in the jail after being convicted for sexual abuse of a minor girl (TR case no. 82/2014). He was awarded 10 years’ rigorous imprisonment by a special POCSO court in Bhbaneswar few months back.
According to sources, on the fateful morning guards of the jail saw Sahoo suffering from severe chest pain. Subsequently, they took him to the jail dispensary where he underwent treatment. However, he collapsed in his cell a few hours later. He was rushed to the Capital Hospital in an unconscious state, but was declared ‘brought dead’ by the doctors.
The family members of the deceased reached the hospital on being informed about his death, but they refused to accept his body. They demanded a probe into Sahoo’s mysterious death and compensation. Currently, Sahoo’s body is lying inside the mortuary after post-mortem. Meanwhile, Laxmisagar police have initiated a probe into the matter after registering an unnatural death case.
