Bhubaneswar, March 26: The second edition of the National Language Conference will kick off March 30, officials concerned told reporters in a press conference held here. The four-day event, which will end on April 2 is expected to witness coming together of several intellectuals, linguists, academicians and other prominent leaders from different disciplines from the city as also from other parts of the state and the country.
The first National Language Conference was organised on January 2 this year to promote regional languages. According to officials, this year the theme of the conference will be ‘Oriya as a language of knowledge and a language of development’. “Our working committee members are toiling hard to organise the upcoming four-day language conference, which will focus on several facets of different classical languages of India. With the inclusion of Oriya in the classical language category, deliberations on the subjects in detail are expected to take place,” Sudarshan Das, one of the organising members told reporters.
Ramchandra Khuntia, Rajya Sabha MP said, “Our country has different rich languages. However, with the passage of time English has taken the centre stage. The conference will focus on promoting Oriya as a language among the people from the state. Many delegates from across the country are expected to take part in the event. I urge the intellectuals, linguists, experts and other prominent people from different sectors to take part in the deliberations.”
The officials said that the Governor of Orissa and the Chief Minister of the state are slated to take part in the event alongside other experts. The conference is expected to discuss topics such as classical traditions in Indian languages, mother tongue and multi-linguism as policy, comparative literature in India and cultural heritage of India.
