Paradip: Tension ran high at Barei square on Cuttack-Paradip road near Bhutamundai area of Jagatsinghpur district after a student died and two others were injured in a road mishap Saturday morning.
The deceased student has been identified as Kanhu Mohanty of Barei village and the injured students are Om Prakash Swain and Dibya Pattanayak.
As the news broke, hundreds of irate people took to the streets and staged a demonstration demanding compensation to the bereaved families. They also sought restriction on heavy vehicles plying on Cuttack-Paradip road.
The police reached the spot and tried to pacify the angry people. The demonstration was on at the time of filing this report.
According to locals, Kanhu, Om Prakash and Dibya were going to their coaching class on their bicycles. Near Barei square, a heavy vehicle hit the trio from behind, leading to Kanhu’s death on the spot.
Local people rushed Om Prakash and Dibya to Biju Memorial Hospital and then to SCB Medical College and Hospital in Cuttack.
The driver fled the spot with the vehicle after the incident.
