Dharmagarh: In a heartrending incident, the body of an 80-year-old woman at Dokripada village of Phunda panchayat under Golamunda block in Kalahandi district was Saturday carried to the cremation ground by her four daughters for last rites.
The villagers, relatives and neighbours of deceased Kanak Satpathy allegedly refused to attend her funeral because of her poverty. Left with no options, orphaned daughters carried the body on their shoulders to the cremation ground of the village to perform the last rites.
The villagers, however, favoured them with some fuel wood to burn the body. But they were found insufficient for the purpose. Leaving the body half-burnt, the daughters returned home and removed a portion of the roof of their mother’s house to collect some more wood to complete the funeral.
According to reports, Kanak had lost her husband Murali Satpathy about 30 years back. The sonless woman begged to bring up her four daughters. She even managed to marry them off with whatever she had earned from beggary. One of her daughters was staying with Kanak after the death of her husband.
The elderly woman died Friday evening due to old age. The three other daughters reached the village Saturday after they were informed about the death of their mother.
Though they sought the help of villagers and their kin in last rites of their mother, none came forward. They finally, had to pick up the body and complete the job.
Bolangir/Titilagarh: Government Railway Police in Bolangir is again in the news for wrong reasons. It reportedly tied up the body of an unidentified youth, stuffed it in a sack and dragged it to a train bogie to send it to the district headquarters hospital for post mortem.
The incident happened Saturday when the GRP personnel found the body lying near rail tracks at Siker village.
Sources said gangmen working on the Bolangir-Titilagarh rail route near Siker village noticed the body lying near column no-740 of the track and informed GRP police. Railway police rushed to the spot and seized the body for post-mortem. They called sanitary workers to the spot and asked them to take the body to the district headquarters hospital.
Sanitary workers tied up the body in a sack and dragged it over a distance before loading it in Koraput-Howrah bound Samaleshwari Express. The body was brought down from the train at Bolangir and was sent to the district headquarters hospital for post-mortem. The body after its arrival in the hospital was kept in a morgue as the post-mortem was to be conducted Sunday.
When contacted, Bolangir GRP IIC Kamalnath Khalko said the youth had slipped down from a moving train and died Friday. PNN
