Bhubaneswar, March 27: FM Soumya Ranjan Mishra of Orissa with five points emerged one of the 10 joint leaders after the end of the sixth round of the IIIrd All India Bhubaneswar Fide rating Chess Championships here Friday.
Soumya Ranjan played brilliantly to checkmate his inform state mate Rajesh Nayak (4) in the sixth round. WGM Kiran Manisha Mohanty (4), FM Rakesh Kumar Jena (4.5), Vaibhav Mishra (4), Binayak Rath (4) and Pranab Kumar Patra (3.5) also scripted convincing wins.
Kiran defeated V Sirsat Shekhar of Maharashtra emphatically, and Rakesh beat Biswajit Nayak of Orissa easily. Vaibhab overcame Hrushikesh Rath, while Binayak prevailed over Santosh Raj Panda.
Utkal Ranjan Sahoo could only salvage a draw with another star player of the state Saina Salonika. Among others, Smaraki Mohanty and Sambit Panda also played out draws against their respective opponents. However Sunyasakta Satpathy suffered a reverse at the hands of from FM Mitrabha Guha of West Bengal.
Nine players lead
Nine players are leading the pack with three points each after the end of the third round of the Xth All Orissa Open Chess Championship, which was inaugurated at the Orissa Secretariat Recreation Club here Friday. They are Manas Parida, Birakishore Behera, Prakash Sahoo, Sailendranath Rout, Prabhat Ojha, Gangadhar Panda, Sunil Sethy, Aditya Patnaik & Tukuna Kandi. They are closely followed by six players- Sahadev Khatei, Santosh Sinha, Sumit Kumar, Arati Bijoy Mohanty, Akhila Majhee & Vivek Sahoo, with 2.5 points each.
