Malkangiri: A couple from Spain Thursday adopted an orphan child of the tribal Koya community of Dariguda village in Tamasa panchayat under this block.
Nayan Madkami was all but four years of age when he lost his parents. Neighbours took care of him for a few days but later expressed their inability to continue doing so. The then sarpanch Bhima Madkami came to know about the plight of the child and drew the attention of the district child welfare committee chairperson Sanjukta Pradhan to the incident. The committee, after holding a discussion with the villagers, put up the child at an orphanage in Malkangiri town June 2, 2017. Later, Nayan was shifted to a special adoption home at Dasamantapur in Koraput district August 18, 2017. Since then he had been staying there.
Meanwhile, New Delhi-based Central Adoption Resource Agency (CARA), through an advertisement October last year, sought the attention of the people who were interested to adopt Nayan.
Responding to the ad, a couple of Spain expressed their interest and applied for it. Malkangiri child welfare committee informed the district judge court about the application of the Spanish nationals. The court approved the application and ordered the committee to hand over Nayan to the couple.
On being informed, the couple from Spain Thursday arrived here with the passport and other documents of Nayan. The duo spoke to the officials of district child welfare committee and furnished their documents. Later, they went to the birthplace of the child.
They would pick up Nayan from Koraput and move to the national capital Friday. Later, they would fly back to their country, it was learnt.
Koraput child welfare committee programme coordinator Soumyaranjan Patnaik and Malkangiri child welfare committee chairperson Sanjukta Pradhan were among others who were present on the occasion.
