Bhubaneswar, March 27: Sports Hostel, Bhubaneswar defeated Sundargarh at the Baramunda Ground here Friday to enter in the final of the IInd All India Chandan Cup women’s football tournament. They will meet ECoR in the final Saturday.
In an exciting clash, Sports Hostel managed to win riding on a strike by Jasamani Samad. Both sides failed to break the deadlock in the first half. But immediately after the interval, Sports Hostel managed to get the all important winning-goal
Mahesh, Rutuparna triumph
Top seed Mahesh Mohapatra and Rutuparna Chaodhury of Orissa emerged champions in the U-14 boys’ and girls’ events respectively in the AITA-OTPPA Championship Series Tennis Tournament here Friday.
In a day dominated by Orissa players in all categories, Mahesh defeated Karnataka’s Vishal Reddy Pagadala 6-2, 6-2. In the girls’ segment, Rutuparna ousted Anjum Shaik Musharat of Andhra Pradesh 6-4, 6-1.
In boys’ doubles the Orissa’s Amrutjay Mohanty and Assam’s Udit Gogoi defeated the AP duo of Abdul K Khan and Ch Shree Harshit 6-1, 6-0 to emerge winners. However, in the U-12 singles boys’ category, Udit beat his doubles partner Amrutjay 6-1, 4-6, 6-2.
Hind advance
Hind Club edged past Chhamunda Club 4-3 in a nail-biting match to advance to the next round of the District Level hockey tournament at the Veer Surendra Sai Stadium in Sambalpur, Friday. The match ended in a 1-1 draw in the stipulated time. In the ensuing shoot-out, Hind convert three of their five chances, while Chhamunda could strike twice.
In the second match, Youth Club scraped past Dhyan Chand Club 3-2 and in another tie, Northern Star pipped Bhaludunguri Hind Club 1-0.
Hockey Championship
Hockey Orissa (HO) will organise the NALCO Cup State Hockey Championships at the Barabati Stadium in Cuttack March 30-April 7. Twenty teams in the men’s category and eight teams in the women’s category will participate in the competition. The men’s final will be played April 5 and the women’s final will be played April 7 under floodlights. “Based on the performances in the tournament, players will be selected for the national level competitions,” stated HO secretary Pratap Satpathy through a press release Thursday.
Team leaves
A four-member team of trainee mountaineers of Sambalpur left for J & K, Friday, to get advanced training in mountaineering at the Jawahar Institute of Mountaineering and Winter Sports. They mountaineers are Romancal Bhoi, Satya Priya Pradhan, Lipika Seth and Salim Tirkey.
