State govt recognises 130 startups: IIT-Bhub to get world-class Centre of Excellence

Bhubaneswar: Altogether 130 startups working in 34 sectors have been recognised by the Startup Orissa Initiative so far.

This was revealed by Micro Small and Medium Enterprises (MS&ME) additional chief secretary Laxmi Narayan Gupta at the second meeting of Startup Council held here Wednesday.

Chairing the meeting, Chief Secretary Aditya Prasad Padhi directed the officials concerned to undertake more focused and outcome oriented activities for promotion of innovative entrepreneurship.

The council approved the proposal to provide financial assistance to two new startups in the fields of ‘automation in industry maintenance’, and ‘alternative technology for repair of oil & gas pipe lines’.

Gupta said 18 innovative entrepreneurs are now getting financial assistance from the council. With today’s approval, the number grows to 20. These startups are working in different sectors ranging from agriculture to aeronautics, from analytic to virtual reality, health sector to human resources, IT services to Internet connectivity, renewable energy to robotics and from tourism to transportation, Gupta said. 

He further said four Incubation Centres operating in the state have been brought under the fold of the Council. Orissa Start-up Policy has already been notified. An interactive web portal under the name www.startupodisha.gov.in has been launched and operating well, he added.

Various activities for coming six months with estimated expenditure of Rs 15 crore was discussed and approved in the meeting.

It was decided to provide all support for flourishing of a world class state-of-the-art Centre of Excellence in the Research and Entrepreneurship Park of IIT, Bhubaneswar. It would be a centre of Virtual & Augmented Reality for Immersive Visualisation.

The centre was given a kick-start by philanthropic contribution of Rs 2.5 crore from Susmita Bagchi and a matching grant of Rs 2.5 crore by state government. Director General of Software Technology Park of India (STPI) Omkar Rai, who was present at the meeting, assured of all support from STPI for development of the centre. Rai said the STPI would provide a fund support of Rs 2.5 crore for the centre.

Participating in the deliberation, RV Raja Kumar, Director IIT, Bhubaneswar said that the centre would have a world class incubation centre, laboratory, highly focused courses along with education & skill development programmes.

It may be pertinent here to mention earlier the Council had nominated six nodal agencies for evaluating and processing start-up applications. These were IIT-Bhubaneswar, STPI-Bhubaneswar, NIT-Rourkela, IMMT-Bhubaneswar, OUAT-Bhubaneswar and NIFT-Bhubaneswar.
